Public transport

I have worked out why public transport is wrong.Well it’s like this; It’s all on their terms.

You see, I got up at 7 this , showered, had breakfast, got to the station, got train, got to work and it was 8am very efficient if you think about it. 1 hour to accomplish that ( its more than I have accomplished in the two hours since I have been at work)

However the point is, it is not what I would have otherwise chosen to do. And in today’s world where marketers, companies, websites, and even banks personalize everything to your taste - down to my individual requirements and capabilities Public transport will never gain more popularity over other modes, as it does not meet my personal requirements, which is; not to be dictated to what time I have to get up; how fast I have to eat my breakfast; when I have to be at a train platform; and how many people I have to share my journey with.

Thus public transport will begin to fade away; the greens have no chance unless they ban everything.

When a group claimed responsibility on the website for the attacks on the 7th of July, they talked about British policy not just in Iraq, but in Afghanistan. Are people suggesting we shouldn't be in Afghanistan?

When Sergio de Mello was murdered in Iraq -- a brave man, a distinguished international diplomat, a person immensely respected for his work in the United Nations -- when al Qaeda gloated about that, they referred specifically to the role that de Mello had carried out in East Timor because he was the United Nations administrator in East Timor.

Now I don't know the mind of the terrorists. By definition, you can't put yourself in the mind of a successful suicide bomber. I can only look at objective facts, and the objective facts are as I've cited. The objective evidence is that Australia was a terrorist target long before the operation in Iraq. And indeed, all the evidence, as distinct from the suppositions, suggests to me that this is about hatred of a way of life, this is about the perverted use of principles of the great world religion that, at its root, preaches peace and cooperation. And I think we lose sight of the challenge we have if we allow ourselves to see these attacks in the context of particular circumstances rather than the abuse through a perverted ideology of people and their murder.

Drinkers in Wellington bars ordered their final round Thursday night with minimal protest.

At the stroke of midnight, the Alcohol safety Amendment Act 2006 came into force, banning the consumption of alcohol in restaurants, bars, casinos and sports clubs.

Although the new legislation had been lambasted by most of New Zealand Society, most bars put on a brave face as the bell for last orders rang for the last time.

A group of seven punters sharing a large bottle spirits at the Lounge Bar launched a small protest, simultaneously doing a line of shooters at midnight. But with Ministry of Health and City council officials supported by the police in attendance bar staff encouraged them to go home.

At Happy Go Lucky Bar in Cuba Mall, it wasn't the drinkers protesting - it was the bar.

Owner Sheldon Middleton said he disagreed with the new law and thought that the government had finally gone too far, so drinkers were allowed to drink until the bar was forced to close by police.

"It was a sad night, you can tell people don’t agree with the law but seem paralyzed to fight it" said Mr. Middleton yesterday.

In Auckland, Don Sing - the boss of Auckland strip club GoGo’s – handed out free beers from the back of his car.

Mr. Sing, a recovering alcoholic, thought alcohol consumption was a matter of “personal choice". Mr. Sing went on to say that his business will probably not last another month. The “valuable Asian businessman” clientele would no longer patronize strip clubs preferring for private functions run by gangs.

Mr. Sing feared for his girls, as there already had been reports of strippers taking drugs and physical abuse during such events. “The government has sent fun underground” Mr. Sing added.

Many bars have expressed Mr. Sing’s concerns that the ban will drive them out business. One Wellington bar owner who did not want to be named said “There’s no money in coffee and cake.”

At Wellington bar Handles yesterday, bar worker Jo Pearson said that though patrons didn't need to be reminded that it was last drinks, many of the regulars had not shown up for their usual in protest and disgust.

In Queenstown, New Zealand’s premier tourist destination, revelers thrown on the streets at midnight began to smash windows of nearby shops and restaurants. Mike Kendall a British backpacker was slightly bemused by the whole experience “This is just like back home in London, except I don’t have to catch the tube!” referring to the 11pm closing of pubs in England's capital. Mr. Kendall said he had one more day in New Zealand and looked forward to getting to Sydney for a fosters. He said he would think twice about recommending New Zealand to his friends as a place to go. “I can’t believe it” Mr. Kendall added, “You can’t even have a smoke anywhere.”

Tourism minister, and prime supporter of the bill Ron Chadwick, said that the cost to New Zealand society of alcohol had become too great and curtailing the ability to purchase alcohol except for use at home was long overdue.

Mr. Chadwick believed the move would encourage more families to venture out at night. "In five years time we will look back and think why did we ever need a drink?"

Mr. Chadwick said the aim of the act was health-focused.

"Alcohol doesn’t only affect those who drink it but those who drive on our roads and suffer abuse at the hands of the drinker”

Well is it or isn't it?

Those of you who have been unlucky enough to stumble across this website previously will find the recurring theme of highlighting the doom merchants peddling the world is about to end story because everyone is driving a SUVe and using hair spray. These environmental Doom Sayers are the new lot, who took over from the last lot who said that the world was going to run out of everything about 20 years ago. - WRONG! : Another topic –

OK I admit there is climate change, but there always has been climate change. It is well documented through out the history of the world that the earth’s climate heats up and cools down every so often. Heck, in the 70’s scientists were saying that we were heading for an ice age, but now they are saying you will be able to row your boat right up to the 13^th story window when the polar caps melt.

What has happened is that the meddlers in conjunction with some dubious scientists – afraid of loosing their research grants - have used the fear mongering media to their own devices and whooped everyone into a frenzy about the impending disaster. And while everyone wasn’t looking they managed to slip in things like “carbon credits” or sustainable output performance hydrocarbon volumetric dispensation tax (I made that up). All of which will do didly squat to save the world. It will however give the moochers another line to your wallet.

What I’m getting to is that there was snow on the hills around Wellington last week (extremely rare for late November) and the NZ met service predicts a cold summer At the same time speakers at various conventions around the world predict a warming climate and mass extinction.

But as usual, just as summer starts, forecasters are hedging their bets. Dr Jim Salinger of the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, said he saw no reason to change Niwa's last long-range forecast for "average or near-average" temperatures in the North Island between November and January.

What is important here is that everything is a prediction, which is by definition something that may or my not happen. So if the predictions are wrong, like the run out of everything lot were, will we get out money back?

The thing about common sense is that it not that common

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of Common Sense who has been with us for many years. No-one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn’t always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not Kids, are in charge). His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Finally, Common sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents; Truth and Trust, his wife; Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still know him pass this on, if not join the majority and do nothing.

Worried? Only for my wallet.

The subscript to the headline in the Dominion this morning suggests that we should be worried about the economic affects of el nino in the next few years. So it will get warmer, dryer, wetter and colder all at the same time. The problem that I see is the green panderers will charge ahead and implement the Kyoto protocol. To which I will say "WHY!” to which they will say "NZ has to do its part to stop Global Warming!" It's at that point that I purposely take my 6ltr 4x4 and run repeatedly over some rare tussock.

Global warming myths much to the Medias overlooking have been debunked in recent studies but let’s not let facts get in the way of great emotional stories.

Just a few points from a recent seminar quoted at SEPP

World Temperatures do not follow CO2 levels and indeed the warmest periods in the last 2,000 years were the Roman period and the Medieval period which were both warmer than present and had lower CO2 levels {various speakers - William Kininmonth Australian Climate Research}.

Solar particles decisively affect World temperatures. There is a much better correlation between world temperatures and particles than with CO2 levels {Piers Corbyn, Weather Action, London}.

There is no significant Sea level rise - in particular the Maldives are in no danger of submergence {Prof Nils-Axel Morner, Stockholm University}.

There is no climate induced increased danger of tropical diseases, e.g. malaria, since it is not itself a tropical disease - having being prevalent in Russia and Britain at various times. {Paul Reiter, Pasteur Institute Paris}.

There is no discernible link between Global warming & Extreme weather. Indeed the British Govt delegation specifically said they did not claim any increase in storms due to man-made CO2. {Madhav L Khandekar, consulting meteorologist, Ontario, Canada}.

You would think that the whole point of going into politics -besides muddling with other peoples lives- would be the perks. Free travel for the family, free accomodation, free meals and free fairy cakes at the rotary club. So both Don and Helen get caught speeding, whoop de doo. The only problem as I see it is that the motocade, mostly comprised of Fords, didn't have a breakdown, and therefore any talk of the record time made be brought into question. If I were PM I'd scrap the Fairlanes for Merc 500's, with serious silver alloys and blackened windows. Get that real tin pot dictatorship feel going.

New Zealanders are quite happy to be frogs in the pot. The heat is getting a little warmer now and when it finally begins to boil how will they bleat.

I'm all for smoking, it's your choice. If a bar is too smoky I leave. I a bar is forced to be smoke free and the punters stay away in droves and the cost of dropped sales is passed on in the drink price, I leave.

I hope that some bar owners have the balls to do this.

From memory the only smokefree bar in Wellington failed cause no one went in there.

Let’s nuke em

Apparently we are going to have another winter of power shortages. We can’t build power stations because the taniwhas won’t allow a single blade of tussock to be hurt because it’s the natural habitat of a rare snail. Or could it be, as is in Wellington, one of those “you can’t build those propellers in my back yard, they are an eyesore and will hamper bird flight” situations. Not to mention that they are not very efficient. Or perhaps our pay-off, sorry koha, was'nt large enough.

I have the solution! Like Mao's plan, you commies will love this, instead of a steel smelter in every kitchen how about a nuclear power station in every village? Just think about the benefits! West Coasters could use the cheap and abundant electricity to power electric chain saws when they cut down the native forests. Certainly would reduce the noise pollution.

I just don’t get it

I have met a number of Americans since the invasion of Iraq and none thus far support George W and the campaign in Iraq. And I’ll tell ya I just don’t get it. It’s bad enough getting it from the clueless in NZ but I have sat through a number of conversations where you get the rolled eyes, the scoffs and the sarcastic comments. But what do they mean?

Do they think the invasion of Afghanistan was wrong? Then what about bringing those to justice for the attacks on the WTC, the plane crash in Pennsylvania, the plane crash at the pentagon, the US embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania , the attack on the USS Cole, the Bali night club bombing, the Madrid train bombings…do I need to carry on?

So the Invasion of Iraq was wrong as well? I quote Clinton, Albright, Kerry et al.. “Saddam Hussein is a threat to the Middle East and measures must be taken to stop him developing chemical, biological and nuclear weapons” How did they intend to remove the Saddam threat? Surely George W only OK’d what had already been put into motion. Was it wrong to stop the killing of Iraqi’s – The UN said that 10,000 people a year were being killed in Iraq because of Hussein. We knew Hussein had the capability before and there was no reason now that he did not have programs for WMD’s. So freeing the people of Iraq from an evil dictator and preventing at least an Iraqi born WMD attack is wrong?

Do they want the UN to deal with Saddam? Saddam ignored all 19 or so resolutions passed in the Security Council, what made them think that it would be any different now? Even now as the Oil for fraud scandal leads right up to the cheeky darkie, do they still want the UN to be involved? Do they need to be reminded of the great UN successes like Somalia, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia – and yes I know we live in enlightened times.

I can go on but I need to draw some conclusions for myself at least. I figure that those that scoff at George W and the US action in Iraq and Afghanistan forget a few things. On September the 11th 4 planes crashed on United States soil killing in excess of 3,000 people. The reason for these people dying was that they were non-believers. You see, in the west we can buy a newspaper in the morning reporting that a man of god has molested a child and been sent to prison. We can chose not to pray 5 times a day, not to go to a place of worship or not to worship at all. In the west we can see women in all their beauty in what ever clothes they want to wear. We are not required to starve our selves unless you read cosmo. And we don’t have to run on to a bus with Semtex strapped to our back to find 400 virgins waiting for us in the after life. What I am saying is that many people take our western culture for granted and even spurn it in the name of multi-culturalism or some other form of social engineering.

Well what do you want? Honestly if Iraq, Iran, the Sudan, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Libya and Afghanistan are such great then why don’t you go and live there. Actually I am beginning to understand these people and it scares me deeply.

Ensuring Bush will be president

It’s emerging that the prison abuses in Iraq are nothing more than a bunch of frat boy pranks, with a little more blood. It’s still abhorrent and nothing more or less than what occurs in other Middle Eastern jails, maybe a little less death of immediate family members.

So just as the lefty peaceniks whoop themselves into an impeachment frenzy again over Abu Ghraib, the islamo-fascists (remember? the guys who we are at war with? cause they threaten our very existence) chop some saps head off. Not just any sap, an American sap. The Pentagon doesn’t believe him to be on their pay role, nor is he one of those evil civilian contractors rebuilding Iraq. The chap’s mother said he was an independent businessman and was scheduled to leave back in March. The reason for him being there is at this stage unknown. If you are a conspiracy theorist he was in Iraq on a secret government mission. If you’re a lefty he was an evil businessman exploiting the occupied peoples of Iraq. If you’re a blood thirsty republican hawk, he was a peacenik who tried to protect the wrong crowd. If you’re an islamo-facist he was an infidel, praise allah the almighty. Who knows, he could have even been the most evil of evil, a Christian missionary.

But what will our TV screens show tonight? Lets take a guess, TV one will open with a BBC reporter standing in front of US marines storming through Najaf saying that the beheading was “…an expression of the deep seated resentment that the Iraqi people have for the American occupation forces.” We can expect nothing better from TV3 either. I fully expect the media to continue looking for more “coalition abuses”; don’t suppose they will talk about the fake torture claims etc.

Just like to make a point here, is it just me or are the media suffering from “Labour-arrogance” syndrome. You know where they totally miss-judge it’s audience and find that they are watching Melrose Place re-runs on Sky 1.

This leads me to my conclusion. If there ever was a way to distract attention away from what could have been a little mess for Bush, Rumsfeld et-al, then chopping the head off an American, video taping it and posting it on the web would be one way to do it. (No doctor of spin could have ever come up with that). If the American people needed reminding what Iraq is about, without a plane going through the 75th floor window on final approach, then issuing a cash for infidel blood scheme would pretty much work. We are at war to save our civilasation people! Yet I fear that the peacenik appeasing lefties will sit back at their café’s drinking their organic soy lattes and ferment on the imperialistic Adolf Bush and express compassion for the noble Islamic freedom fighters. All I can say is “I can hear that crescent shaped blade being sharpened right now.”

That's all I have to say

I in no way condone this behaviour. It’s deplorable in every sense and makes us look like them. However in its usual way the media has jumped all over it. Both free to air news programs show the images of the barbaric infidels oppressing their noble and misunderstood prisoners. Well that’s the impression I get anyway, and this blog is about the way I think. So why wasn’t more made of the smiling and jeering Iraqi’s standing in front of American corpses hanging from a bridge in Falujah? Why didn’t John Campbell et-al give those “I’m concerned, seriously I am“ looks when the western contractors were capture and killed Mogadishu style?

Well Brig. Gen. Kimmitt was concerned, and conducted operations to bring those who committed the crime to justice, hence the current Falujah situation. Once again Brig. Gen. Kimmitt is taking action by sacking and ordering an investigation about what went on at Abu Ghurayb prison. Did the Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr do the same when his supporters took the Americans? Did international leaders denounce the attacks on the American civilians in early April?

The answer of course is no. So why is there a different standard for us and them?

Why doesn't TV report this stuff

I have been attempting to watch the evening news to catch the latest scoop on the oil for food corruption at the UN - nothing. How a British labour MP a confirmed sadomite with hankerings for the old soviet days (funny how commies and their mates have seaside palaces- I refer to Mr. Galloway's Spanish retreat) was up to his cuticles in Iraqi grease continues to support the old regime and now is exposed in captured Iraqi documents as having received oil credits for his support - nixt. Or how Kofe Anan's son was running the company that siphoned millions from the oil food transactions - nada

So what does television in New Zealand focus on? Well the usual stuff ‘Quagmire’, 'Death of innocents', 'misunderstood martyrs', 'abnormally wooly sheep.' Last nights pictures of an 'angry crowd' in Iraq consisted of 4 people, with the camera positioned at a low angle, obviously the rent-a-crowd people couldn't get enough militant youths in time. So I'm going to change my news source, and I think that these guys are it. At least they are funny to boot. You should also check out the human interest sections.

Keep your hands on your wallets boys

Whenever someone says that they would be happy to pay more tax for health or education warning bells start to ring. “Here’s another social do-gooder that has never done a single economics paper in their life!” What really annoys me about this mentality is that people actually think that the guvament can actually provide them with the services that they require. Now, I along with everyone believe that doctors, hospitals and all that kind of stuff is a good idea, where else would the writers of Shortland street, Scrubs and ER get their ideas from? All that would be on TV would be crime dramas and reality TV shows about being stuck on a dessert island while remodelling the kitchen. But seriously what do people actually think when the say “my extra tax should go to the health system.” The end result will not be more health, it will be more guvament!

In NZ we have 21 District Health Boards for a population of 4 million. Break each DHB down and you will find that they all have a board of directors, a vast raft of hanger on-ers trying to write policy papers about “appropriate health outcomes for disadvantaged health consumers” and not too mention the cultural consulting team. A quick comparison across the ditch shows us that the state of Queensland has a population the same size as New Zealand’s yet they have one organisation delivering health services. 21 verses 1, you would think NZ would have some of the healthiest people in the world, but we don’t.

If the guvament threw more money into the health system there would be more policy analysts, directors and hui’s swallowing up all the extra cash. They would probably spend most of their time trying to work out how to spend all the extra money, not on how to build more operating theatres to perform hip replacements. There won’t be a sudden increase in the number of doctors; it takes along time to learn how to perform a hip operation, if you can keep them in the country once qualified. (We could register some of those immigrant doctors who are currently driving our cabs – but that’s another posting) Throwing more money at the health system won’t get the results expected.

Here is an idea, take an economics lesson, ignore the guvament, keep your money in your own pocket and buy some health insurance!

Mr mare looks no more Maori than the average swarthy European however claims and acts as the executor off all things Maori. In this mornings dompost he claims that his lot kicked an army unit from a Wanganui beach.
"We've taken a clear stance. We see it (the Government's plans) as straight theft and confiscation and we'll defend our lands as we see fit"
Does this mean that there will be active engagement on the part of the activists against the military again if they are caught "without permission." So civilians challenging military. Does Mr Mare and his band of merry men have the means to do so? And if so does the term 'activist' get replaced with enema of the people or even terrorist?

To the Senior Officer in charge of any army unit in the area of the terrorist occupation forces, next time challenged return fire!

Helen never would have allowed it

Michael Totten, over at tech central, sights little old New Zealand as part of the coalition of the willing, if push came to shove.

"Look at America's relationships to New Zealand and Indonesia. New Zealand is not a part of the coalition of the willing in Iraq. We never expected New Zealand's help. We never asked for New Zealand's permission to depose Saddam Hussein"

Luckily the US never relied on NZ’s permission or anyone’s for that matter. Hels’s quote that the invasion of Iraq would never have “..occurred if Al Gore was president” was part of the whole UN legitimacy thing.

But are we not part of the coalition of the willing already?. As always in politics you can say one thing and do another. For all the talk about a UN sanctioned mandate NZ military forces are working along side the coalition in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 61 military personnel in Iraq, at the moment, maybe comprised largely of engineers, but the SAS in Afghanistan aren’t there to fix the water supply. Furthermore I wonder what our old Skyhawk pilots are doing? The last time I checked Jaguars and Harriers weren’t being used to deliver relief supplies to Niue. So Hels’s, are we or aren’t we? And does our involvement make us a target for civilian kidnappings in Iraq? Will these guys think that we are a legitimate target? When can we send in our crack TradeNZ boys?

It’s not that I don’t support our countries involvement in the war on terror. But when I talk to people about Iraq etc. it’s met with the usual comments about “Quagmire”, another Vietnam and a Hitler/Bush comparison. And if they are particularly loopy like Alliance voters, words like “JOOOS” and “OOOOIL” are thrown in for good measure. Are they oblivious that we are already there or has the spin pulled the proverbial wool over the sheeple’s eyes?

Anywho, to our guys in harms way, stay safe and make us proud.
